Frequently Asked Questions
We welcome your inquiries and are ready to assist you on your path to urologic health.
What is a urologist?
A urologist is a doctor who specializes in the urinary tract (kidneys, bladder, ureters, urethra) and the male reproductive organs. Urologists diagnose and treat conditions ranging from urinary tract infections and kidney stones to prostate problems and men’s health issues. They treat both medical and surgical problems of the urinary and genital systems in adults and children.
When should I see a urologist?
See a urologist if you notice any concerning urinary or reproductive symptoms. Examples include blood in the urine, pain or burning when peeing, a weak urine stream, frequent or urgent need to urinate, trouble getting or keeping an erection, or unexplained pelvic pain. These could be signs of infection, stones, prostate enlargement, or other treatable conditions. Don’t ignore symptoms – urologists are experts at finding and fixing these issues early.
What can I expect during my first visit?
We will take a thorough medical history, perform relevant exams, order diagnostic tests (urine tests, imaging, urodynamics), and then discuss findings and options before any intervention.
How should I prepare for my visit?
To get the most out of your appointment, bring a list of your current symptoms, any medications or supplements you take, and notes on your medical history. It’s helpful to jot down questions you have in advance. As one source advises, expect to discuss your health history and reasons for the visit, and be ready to answer questions about your symptoms and lifestyle. The more information you share, the better Dr. Nzukuma can diagnose and treat you.
Do I need a referral to see Dr Nzukuma?
In many cases no, but check with your insurer or medical scheme. We can guide you on whether a referral is needed.
Do urologists treat women too?
Urologists care for anyone with urinary or genital issues. In fact, urology is not just for men – women also have a urinary system that can have infections, stones, or leakage that a urologist treats. A urologist “specializes in conditions that affect the urinary and reproductive systems in adults and children,” which covers both men and women. The male and female urinary tracts are very similar, so Dr. Nzukuma helps female patients with kidney stones, incontinence, recurrent UTIs and similar problems as well.
